Ujjain is one of the oldest cities in the country and the one which has not lost much of its shine with the passage of time. Though today’s Ujjain is not the same as it was earlier but still unlike other Jain teerth kshetra, it has maintained its status as a big city and centre of trade and business. It was earlier known as Avantika but it was changed to Ujjain during the Jain rule here. It is also a siddha kshetra as Muni Abhayghosh attained salvation from here.
It was from here that Acharya Bhadrabahu having come to know about hard times for the city left it along with his large number of munis of his sangh towards the south of India. Samrat Chandragupt Maurya having taken deeksha from him had also accompanied him.
Near the temple, a museum have been established by Malwa Regional Association wherein old relics relating to the glorious past of Jain culture and history have been kept.
