Dr. Oivi Prakash Jain
A famous personality in the field of Engineering and highly well-known for his achi- evemnts. Dr. O.P. Jain was born at Nakur in Distt. Saharanpur (U.P.) on August 1,1922. He got his early education at Bareilly, passed High School, Intermediate Science and B-Sc. examinations in 1st Division with distinctions and getting several merit scholarships and medals.
He passed Civil Engineering (Hons.) in 1944 from Thomason College of Civil Engineering, Roorkee with first position getting merit schoraship throughout. He was awarded Council of India Prize of Rs. 1000/- and seven gold and silver medals. He obtained Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from London University in 1956.
Dr. Jain joined U.P., PWD as Assistant Engineer in 1944. Having joined as a Lecturer in 1947 he is Professor and Head of Civil Engineering Department of the Roorkee University since 1966. Structural Engineering including Reinforce- ed Concrete and Pre-stressed Concrete is the field of specialisation of Dr. Jain.
He has guided several Ph. D. research scholars. He is author of 4 text books on Structural Engineering of Post-graduate standard and over 35 research papers. Dr. Jain is Fellow of Institution of Engineers India; Chairman, Civil Engineering Panel of Hindi Commission, Govt, of India.
Has been twice Chairman of Institution of Engineers, Roorkee Centre; member of Technical Committees of Indian Standards Institution, Indian Roads Congress, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, R.D.S.O., Indian Society of Technical Education, Academic Council of various Universities etc.
He has a high reputation as a Consulting Engineer in the field of Structural Engineering and is widely consulted by Government Deptts. and Industry for their more intricate technical problems. He evolved a shell roof of 332 ft. span without intermediate supports for which he was awarded Khosla Research Award of 1961.
In one of the consultations for the Yamuna Valley Hydro-Electric scheme a design for the intake structure was evolved by him which resulted in a saving of Rs. 80 lakhs over the original estimate of Rs. 250 lakhs. Interested in philosophical and spiritual study Dr. Jain has written a small book “The Truth” specially for the educated youth.
