Bakhtram Saha


A learned scholar of Jain tenets, philosophy and history, poet Bakhtram Saha was contemporary of Pt. Daulat Ram. He was a strong supporter of the Bhattarak tradition and as a leader of the Bispanthi Digamber Jains had in his ‘Mithyatwa Khandan’ opposed the reformist Terapanthi movement of which Pt. Todarmal was the pioneer. He was born at Chaksu and had settled at Jaipur.

The Lashkar Digamber Jain temple at Jaipur was his working centre for literary and social activities. In ‘Budhi Vilas’ his important composition in 1770, he has given history of the rulers of Jaipur and a good account of the existing society, administration, Jaipur city and damage caused to Jain temples by the royal priest Shyam Tiwari. He also made a small composition Dharma Budhi and other couplets.
