Nawab Asaf-u-ddola, the fourth Nawab of Oudh, (1775—1797) had changed the capital from Faizabad to Lucknow. The increasing development of Lucknow city as a centre of business and trade attracted many Agarwal and Oswal Jain businessmen and jewellers to settle there. Bachraj Nahta an Oswal Jain, soon made a respectable position in the Oudh court and was honoured with the title of Raja. He also became a leading man of the local Jain society. It is believed that he was personal jeweller of the Nawab and held a senior place in his court. Bhadaini Ghat at Varanasi goes by the name of Raja Bachraj Ghat where an ancient temple of Tirthankara Suparswanath is situated.
