A veteran Congress Leader, Ex-Union Minister and Ex-Governor of Kerala, Shri Ajit Prasad Jain has held highest positions in his public life. He was born at Meeut in 1902.
He did his M.A. (Hons) and LL.B. from Lucknow University and has been a practising advocate for many years. He was Member of U.P. Legislative Assembly during 1937-46 and 1946-47; Constituent Assembly of India during 1947-50; Provisional Parliament during 1950-52 ; Lok Sabha during 1952-57,195,7- 62 and 1962-65. He was Minister for Relief and Rehabilitation, Govt, of India from 1950 to 1954 and Minister for Food and Agriculture, Govt, of India from 1954 to 1959; President of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee during 1961-64 ; Governor of Kerala during 1965-66 and Member of the Rajya Sabha from 1968 to 1974. He was appointed Chairman of Irrigation Commission of India in April 1969. He has been Chairman of Rural Urban Relationship Committee and Board of Management U.P. Agricultural University (1960-64) and Leader of Plan Projects Agricultural Team.
Shri Jain established a school for deaf and dumb children and is running a Gram Kalyan Kshetra at Chutmalpur in Distt. Saha- ranpur (U.P.) for social and educational uplift of countryside. He has travelled in Europe, U.S.A., Sudan, Egypt, Malaysia, Japan, etc. His publications include U.P. Agrarian Laws, and (2) Rafi Ahmad Kidwai-Memoirs of His Life and Time. Land reform and economic matters have been of special interest to Shri A. P. Jain. Married to Smt. Lakshmi Devi Jain, he is blessed with two sons and one daughter.
