Shri Lakshmi Chandra Jain
A distinguished creative writer and a journalist famed for his style; widely and variedly read in oriental as well as occidental literature, both classical and modern; well- known for his broad outlook on life, Shri L. C. Jain has realistic understanding of religion and philosophy and occupies a distinctive place in social and cultural circles.
Shri Jain was born at Chhatarpur in Madhya Pradesh in 1909. He did his B.A. (Hons) from Hindu College and M.A. in Sanskrit and English literature from Delhi University and always impressed his teachers by his acumen and innate longing for learning. He is well-versed not only in Hindi, Sanskrit and English but is also well at home with Urdu, Bengali and Gujarati. He has to his credit a variety of poems, essays of a style of his own and some very suggestive and reflective pieces of literary criticism.
He had his first service assignment in the All India Radio and gave the first ever Indian running commentary on Solar Eclipse in 1934 from Kurukshetra. Later he took over as Publicity Officer in Bharat insurance Company, Lahore. After some years there he changed over in 1944 to the Rohtas Industries, Dalmia- nagar as Manager. Concurrently he was associated with Bharatiya Jnanpith as Editor of its literary series of publications and its monthly, the Gyanodaya.
In Bharatiya Jnanpith, in fact, lay the real haven of his heart and soul, of his mental make-up and his creative attainments. Since 1953 he became more and more actively involved with this culturo-literary organisation of national importance and became its Secretary, giving to its activities wider perspective and newer dimensions. He is also the ex-officio Member-Secretary of the Selection Board, set up by Bharatiya Jnanpith to look after the successful working of its Annual Literary Award of Rupees One Lakh for the
best creative Indian literary work of a specified period.
Shri Jain was Secretary of Sahu Jain Charitable Society, Calcutta; has been President and is now a mamber of Executive Committee of Research Institute of Prakrit, Jainology and Ahimsa, Vaishali. He is President of All-India Hindi Publishers Association and of Sahayogi Hindi Prakashan, Delhi and holds important offices in several other culturo-literary organisations. Two of his books, ‘Kaghaz Ki Kishtiyan’ and ‘Naye Rang Naye Dhang’ have been very noteworthy for their unique style.
Shri Jain visited Europeon countries during August-September 1974 and had a study of the work being done in various fields of Jainology there.His wife Smt. Kuntha Jain and daughter Smt. Indu Jain are popular Hindi writers.
