Late Shri Umrao Singh Jain born at Rohtak (Haryana) was a selfless social worker. He started his career in Punjab National Bank in 1910 where he was promoted as Asstt. Manager in Chandni Chowk Branch, Delhi. He joined as Manager in Bharat Bank (Chawri Bazar Br.) in 1942 and retired from there in 1948.
Efforts of Shri Jain and his colleagues resulted in the establishment of Jain Mittra Mandal in March 1915. It organised discussions with Arya Samajists which highly impressed them with Jain philosophy and thought. It is the first body to have started in 1925 the annual Mahavir Jayanti celebrations at Delhi.
Shri Jain was an active worker in three All India Institutions—Dig. Jain Maha Sabha, Dig. Jain Parishad and Jain Sangh Chaurasi (Mathura). He was Organising Secretary of Dig. Jain Parishad Conference and of Reception Function organised by Maha Sabha to honour Sir Seth Hukam Chand Jain at Delhi;
General Secretary and Publicity Secretary of Jain Society for Protection of Orphans for several years; Secretary and Manager of Hira Lai Jain Hr. Sec. School, Jain Sanskrit Commercial School and Jain Girls Primary School Kucha Seth ; and Secretary of Jain Seva Samiti and Jain Prem Sabha for several years. He was a member of Ex. Committee of Jain Sports Club.
Interested in poetry, he encouraged it through the functions of Jain Mittra Mandal of which he was General Secretary for a number of years. He was respectfully known as ‘Babuji’. Barrister Champat Rai Jain had much affection for him for his devoted services.
