The Jain temple located in Srinagar is famous for its artistry and grandeur. This is a temple of the followers of the Digambara branch of Jainism. It is said that before the Virhi flood of 1894 AD, this temple was situated in old Srinagar, but due to being washed away in the flood, this temple was rebuilt after the establishment of new Srinagar.
The construction of this temple started in the year 1911 AD and was completed in 1924 AD. Grand statues of Lord Rishabhdev and Lord Parshvanath are installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. A Dharamshala is also established along with the temple.
There is a throne built in Rajasthani style in the sanctum sanctorum and the idol is seated on the four-legged throne. In the year 1970, the famous Jain monk Shri Vidyanandji came and stayed here for a few days.
Kali Kamli Jain Temple, located north of Dharamshala and near Government Girls Inter College, is the first Jain temple in the hilly region after Rishikesh. The entrance of the temple is grand and artistic like the temple itself, made of dark colored stone, as soon as you enter the temple, you get to know the efficiency of the contemporary sculptors of Garhwal.
Like the main entrance of old royal palaces and mansions, there are magnificent openings on both sides of the main entrance, which might have been built for guards in the palaces. As soon as you enter the courtyard of the temple from the entrance, a grand temple facing east is situated on the left side.
Seen from the front, the pillars of the temple’s verandah, and the carvings above them, along with the 13 artistic structures (dasa) attached to the roof of the temple above them, add to the beauty of the temple. Grand statues of Lord Rishabhdev and Lord Parshvanath are installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. A Dharamshala is also established along with the temple.
