A well known name in the wool trade and social circles of Delhi, late Shri Ram Lai Jain was born to his parents Shri Ganga Ram Jain and Smt. Gur Dai Jain at Lahore. Shri Ganga Ram had started his business in sundry goods around 1890 and by virtue of his business talents had acquired a leading position in general merchandise trade not only in Lahore but in various parts of the country.
He was one of the leading importers of Lahore and his firm M/s. Hira Lai Ganga Ram had a distinctive place in the trade. He expired in 1927 when Shri Ram Lai was only eight years old. Shri Ram Lai was married to Smt. Kamla Devi Jain, daughter of Shri Jaswant Mai Jain of Amritsar, at the age of 17.
He started his business career at the age of 21 years by setting up his independent firm M/s. Ganga Ram Ram Lai at Lahore. He developed the business considerably which gave him good dividends. After country’s partition in 1947, Shri Jain settled at Delhi and set up his general merchandise and wool business.
For reasons of his business capabilities, honesty and sincere efforts he rose to the position of one of the leading manufacturers of hand knitting wool. His K.D.R. Wools have country-wide market and popularity. Besides being a big businessman, Shri Jain was an enthusiastic social worker from his very young age at Lahore.
He became a prominent social figure also at Delhi both by participation in work and his philanthrophy. He was associated with several prominent institutions in various capacities. He was President of Mahavir Jain Sangh for several years, Vice-President of Western Punjab Rehabilitation Association and S.S. Jain Sabha Vir Nagar (Jain Colony). He was Secretary of Delhi Hand Knitting Wool Processors Union.
He was a trusted devotee of Muni Shri Sushil Kumar Ji and actively associated himself with organising the World Religions Conferences at Delhi and other activities of great importance initiated by Muniji. He took keen interest in the activities connected with 2500th Nirwan Celebrations of Bhagwan Mahavir and was Treasurer of the Delhi Pradesh committee at the time of his premature and sudden death on 27th August, 1974.
In his untimely death the Jain community has lost a good social worker at a time while his services were needed the most. He is survived by his religious minded wife and two sons Shri Surendra Mohan Jain and Shri Kul Bhushan Jain. Prominent wool manufacturers, both of them have been making a mark in business and social and religious services.
