Diwan Bal Chand Chabra

Balchand Chabra was an influential Diwan of Jaipur State from 1761 to 1772. He was appointed Diwan at the time while religious intolerance was at its height and had greatly disturbed the civic life. During this period of political and social disturbance Diwan Balchand worked with great intelligence. He played an important part in payment of compensation by the State to the Jains for damage to Jain temples in Amer and Jaipur in 1761 caused by the royal priest Shyam Tiwari. In 1762 he got the order issued for 33 parganas of the State to the effect that the Jains would be at liberty to construct their temples and do worshiping without any disturbance. As a result of this, several Jain temples were constructed in the State. Inspired by Pt. Todarmal he alongwith his colleague Diwan Ratan Chand Saha took leading part in organising Indra- Dhwaja Puja held at Jaipur in 1764. On his explaining the religiously jealous mind of Shyam Tiwari and damage casued by him to the Jain temples, the Jaipur ruler had exiled Shyam Tiwari from the State.
