RAJA SHIVPRASAD SITAREHIND


Illustrious Raja Shivprasad was the grandson of Seth Dalchand and son of Seth Uttamchand, decendents of famous Jagat Seths of Murshidabad Seth Dalchand had settled at Banaras. Raja Shivprasad was highly educated intelligent and multi-linguist. Raja Ishwari Marainsingh, the ruler of Banaras, Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Oudh and several other rulers had great regard for his learning and intelligence.

He was a member of the Legislative Council of the Viceroy and was honoured with the titles’of Raja and C.I.E. (Sitarehind) in 1874. On establishment of Government Educational Department in the then U.P. he was appointed the first Inspector of Schools for the whole province.

He had helped the English Officers in the compilation of early provincial gazetteers. The famous Archeological Surveyor General Lord Cunningham treated him as a kind friend. He wrote Itihas Timir Nashak and several other books.

A patron of Hindi language, he championed the cause of introduction of Hindi in the courts, proper education of Hindi in schools and publication of useful Hindi books for the students. Even Bhartendu Harish Chandra had high regards for him and treated him as his Guru.
